Chapter Eleven

0 min read
As the Sorcerers chanted their magic, words that made no sense to her, she felt as though she was being plunged into ice water, molten lava, and back again. Scorching hot coals seemed to burn her, and with every word she heard a girl's agonized screams. She was about to scream to help the girl, but then she realized that must be her. Sloe looked down at her hands, moisture building up in her blue eyes. Every fiber in her body felt like she was either freezing or on fire, and the harder she looked her body, the harder it was for her to see. It was like she was turning to dust..like she was just..fading from existance..    Then it all stopped

Chapter Ten

"Rise and shine, Sleeping Beauty," A dismissive, scornful voice echoed into Sloe's unconscious state. The disturbance made her pale lips part, a slight groan of annoyance cascading from them. Her eye lids peeled apart, revealing a striking blue gaze. Sloe pushed herself upward, shifting her head over to the familiar masculine form of Meskwaki.     "Who made you the ward, skunk breath?" She shot back, extremely irritable at the moment. Her nerves were jumping all around inside her, making her stomach become very queasy. She slid onto her bare feet, running her nimble fingers through her bush-like hair.     "That won't help you, your hair's

"A Night to Remember"

In the Holocaust, the Jewish were not the only ones affected. The German citizens, in ways that some did not even know themselves, were mistreated and stripped of their rights during Adolf Hitler's rein. In order to broadcast the single political party, the Nazi Party, the conniving soul constructed Hitler Youth, which was seen as how Boy Scouts are seen today. In reality, he was brainwashing the youth and teaching them how to be merciless, obedient, and sometimes, but not always, soulless--the perfect soldiers. Then there were the radios that Hitler created, which were programmed with only one station that allowed the public to hear speeches that were being made. However, the Jewish were publicly stripped of their rights, their homes, and even their lives, which gave the Germans the illusion of superiority. In his historical fiction novel, The Book Thief, author Markus Zusak introduces Kristallnacht, or, "The Night of Broken Glass," to demonstrate how horribly the Jewish were treated and how vile anti-Semitism truly was.

In Markus Zusak's historical novel, The Book Thief, he has a character who is personally affected by the disaster. This young man was completely destroyed on the inside because of the Nazi's violent actions, which triggered many nightmares for him. That was one of the things Liesel and the man had in common; the other was the loss of blood relatives. The inspirational Jew Markus wrote about went by the name Max Vandenburg, whose life was connected to Liesel's in more ways than she had thought. He was thrown into hiding after the fateful night of Kristallnacht, but he did not immediately beg the Hubermanns for aid.

Before he had arrived at the Hubermanns' home, he was in the care of his close friend, Walter Kugler. During Kristallnacht, he showed up to Max's house, and tore him away from his family to save his life, his reasoning being that this was an opportunity that he needed to take. Max's family agreed, and so he was forced into leaving them behind. Later in the novel, Max looks back on that night with great regret; he feels guilty that he felt relief, knowing that he would survive while his family was risked. For two years, Max was hidden in Walter's old employment building. Walter promised that he would check on his family every so often, which he did without it seeming suspicious.

Eventually, the both agreed that it was time for Max to move, which brought him to the decision of contacting Hans Hubermann, the man his father had saved in war. His mother had given him a small slip of paper with the name and address of this old friend, and told him to use it if he was in ever in desperate need of help. Walter found Hans and convinced him to help Max, which he did so willingly. Hans sent food and supplies occasionally until he finally found the opportunity to transport Max to his house. Walter gave him scissors to cut his hair with, shaving cream and a razor to shave with, and delivered a copy of Hitler's novel, Mein Kampf, although this was no ordinary copy.

Inside of the front cover, the key to Hans' house was taped, which would give him easy access to the house. When Max arrived, his was skinny and malnourished. His "feathery" hair, which was how Liesel described it when he was growing healthier, was stringy and dying. The affectionate relationship between Liesel and Max did not arrive immediately, but instead it was formed over time. Fear of the Jew consumed her, which forced her mind to regard the idea of harboring him with regret.

No matter how badly she wanted to tell someone of her new predicament, she kept her mouth shut to save not Max, but her own family. Eventually, she got used to the idea of having Max in her house. She realized that they were not so different from each other; in fact, Max was a lot like Liesel. They talked to each other about their frightening nightmares; they both shared respectful adoration for words and the power that they possessed. Max Vandenburg even constructed a few novels for his child friend for her birthdays, as he had nothing else to gift her.

Naturally, she fell in love with them, even though his art talent was not the greatest. The two also found sanctuary in Hans Hubermann's music. Often, he would come down to the basement to play them a few mediocre songs on the accordion, which the two took comfort in. Hans' music meant home. In that time, "home" was both the safest and most dangerous place to be.

The concept of Nazi Germans steadily gaining more power is thrown into the background as Markus focuses on Liesel more than he did on the World War. However, it is still shown on a few occasions. One would be when the everyone in the town had to set up their Nazi-Germany flag in order to celebrate their Führer. Those without it hanging in the window would be punished severely. When the Hubermanns were having trouble finding theirs, it was obviously a very severe predicament.

Fortunately, they located the flag, and they hung it up before anyone noticed it was missing. The second occasion would be that Max's life was in great danger. Ever since Kristallnacht, it was now a federal crime to even be alive. Any souls caught hiding stowaways would be torn from their homes and punished, which created trouble between friends and family. Some were lulled more by the Führer than others, such as Hans' son, Hans Hubermann Junior.

If Hans Junior had found out that his father was harboring a Jew, he would have turned on his own blood in less than a second. However, derision was not the only emotion felt by the Germans. After the night of Kristallnacht, many felt a deep pang of sympathy for the Jews, but not many sides their friends. However, there were documents saying that a few German policemen attempted to protect the Jewish men, women, and children during the destruction of that night by offering them shelter. The overall affect from Kristallnacht was shock; the question of, "what will we do now?" and "how could this happen?" reverberated around Germany.

The luck of the Jews only descended. After Kristallnacht, Hermann Göring, a military commander, issued a decree that demanded the Jewish occupants or business owners of a place that was destroyed during the event must repair the damage themselves. They would receive no help from Germany or the Third Reich, which included no insurance. Insurance claims made by the Jewish were instantaneously revoked. The entire Jewish nationality that lived in Germany had to pay a fine of one million Reichmarks for Grynzpan's, and any other Jew's, hostility toward the Third Reich. ("Nazis Fine Jewish Community" Holocaust and Humanity)

Absolutely no Jews were legally able to be businessmen. If they held a job in business, or if they owned a business. ("Nazis Fine Jewish Community" Holocast and Humanity). They would be released from their position for the time of 1 January 1939. Markus Zusak inserted Kristallnacht as a major topic in his book because he wanted he wanted us to notice the outright severity of anti-Semetism. After Kristallnacht, the Jews were freely losing their rights, and the hatred toward that "race" was growing steadily.

Soon, the hatred was so strong that the Jews had to go into hiding. Which is where Max came in. By seeing Max through Liesel's eyes, you were allowed a glimpse into the pain a Jew held back in that time period. Only through a very creative imagination, and the stories of others, are you ever able to even have an inkling of what it was like. Even then, you can never really know. You would have to experience the hatred, agony, and unfairness of that time yourself to truly fathom what it was like for them.

By researching this topic, two theories were shown about why Kristallnacht was thrown into action. However, it has been proven that "The Night of Broken Glass" was pre-planned, and was going to happen anyway. The convenience of Ernst com Rath's murder only provided a gateway that appeared as if the Jews had it coming to them. Hans-Jürgen Döscher teaches odeon history at Osnabrück University, and is Germany's most sufficient scholar on Kristallnacht. He has gathered enough evidence to support the theory if the murder of vom Rath was not an act against the political injustice, but more along the lines of settling a more personal war.

Vom Rath and Grynzpan had met in Paris, where Herschel Grynzpan had been enrolled into school. Vom Rath bad promised Grynzpan that he would forge some legal documents that would allow Grynzpan to be a legal citizen, but he never kept to his word. Infuriated, Grynzpan had burst into the German Embassy and successfully murdered the man who was his lover, Ernst vom Rath. ("Jewish Boy Kills Nazi Lover" Kate Connolly). There is another theory, except that it is the favored story to explain the events of Kristallnacht. Fearful that Germany would drive the Polish-Jewish citizens from the country, Poland refused reentry by releasing a hoax that the Jews would have to receive a stamp before they could be allowed in.

Alas, there was no stamp, leaving about 50,000 Jews homeless between Poland and Germany. Grynzpan, who was located in Paris, received the information that his family had been relocated to Zbaszyn, the area between Germany and Poland. The Jews were allowed to stay there, but they were not supplied with provisions, supplies, or information. Fueled by rage, Grynzpan burst into the German Embassy with a pistol. His plan had been to assassinate the Ambassador, but the Third Secretary, Ernst vom Rath, had been shot instead.

Vom Rath died two days after the shooting. Hitler, who seized the opportunity to soil the Jews' reputation even further based on the anger of one man, announced that all the Jews were plotting murderers, and they should be punished. Everything Jewish was suddenly banned: literature, culture, even children were not allowed to attend school. There was examples of those new rules in The Book Thief, like when Liesel's Hitler Youth Group had led a book burning. After that came the events of 9 November 1938, otherwise known as "The Night of Broken Glass."

The Book Thief was filled with great quotes that I will cherish. However, only a few shall honor this paper. The first one being: "There were the erased pages of Mein Kampf, gagging, suffocating under the pages as they turned." (Death's Narration, pg. 237). There is a sort of irony in this part of the novel, as he is taking the words of someone that had hurt him so gravely, only to turn them into something beautiful. He had choked the paper in white paint before writing his story, which he gave to Liesel in an effort to show her just how much she had changed his life.

The second quote happens to be the very last line of the novel. It is a very strong sentence that makes the reader think. It makes the reader sympathize with Death, but it also makes them feel a bit guilty that their race could have caused so much pain. "I am haunted by humans." (Death, pg. 550.). Max, too, had been haunted by humans. Hitler had corrupted his dreams, and the memory of what had happened to his family. Because of the night of Kristallnacht, Death had been hard at work collecting the innocent souls, all because of several men's greed.

There has been many events beyond the one of Kristallnacht, but it was definitely one to be remembered. Kristallnacht had been a fairly important part in The Book Thief, to two people in particular. It impacted Liesel by giving her a life-long friend by the name of Max Vandenburg, but for all the wrong reasons. Max's life had turned around for the worse, with the devastation of losing his family and his religion's reputation. However, he had fortunately met Liesel, who changed his life for the better. She was the ray of sunshine in the dark basement, and that had to be one of the most beautiful things that could be read.
